How do I stop iTunes from automatically copying and duplicating downloaded music?

Once I download a song (not on iTunes) it appears in my downloads folder on my Mac and then iTunes automatically opens and duplicates the song and plays it on iTunes app:http://youtu.be/LURgV5R5hOQ

How can I stop iTunes from duplicating the song and just have it appear in my downloads folder rather than the iTunes app as an additional file.

iTunes is up to date.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

Howdy SolidBrowser,

In order to prevent a song from being duplicated into iTunes when downloaded, you need to use the iTunes Preferences.

Go to the iTunes menu > Preferences > Advanced > deselect Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library.

See this article for complete information about iTunes Advanced Preferences - iTunes 12 for Mac: iTunes Advanced preferences
