iMovie crashes

I used iMovie last time about a year ago.

Yesterday I wanted to edit a little video with some clips taken with my Nikon camera but after few seconds iMovie is running and while I'm adding clips to the timeline, it crashes.

I tried several times, I thought it was just a temporary problem.

Then I updated everything (to last OS version: 10.10.5) and this morning I tried one more time.

It even crashed before I could say "it's working!".

What can I do?

I also wanted to insert the log, but I can't because "this message contains invalid characters".

OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

I too have been trying to trouble shoot this with Apple Tech Support. iMovie is crashing with me when Sharing. I put a new 10.10.5 system on an external drive and booted from that. iMovie performed 100% ok. On my iMac using its internal drive iMovie either crashes on startup or when sharing. Apple Tech Support have asked me to trash my copy of iMovie and re-download from the App store. Doing this now (very slow despite being on fast broadband - over 50 mins). Apple due to phone back after download. Will report more later

At last Apple Support have found a solution! When you launch iMovie hold down the Opt/Alt and Command keys and this action will reset all the prefs to the default. iMovie will launch as if it was a first time launch. As I write I have 'sharing' a fairly long movie to my DeskTop, and it has got over half way - so fingers crossed! Apparently this is a new feature in the latest version. I wish Apple had told us.... would have saved me and their techies a lot of time.

I may have understood the problem.

Is it possible that iMovie has difficult to manage files which are stored on an external hard drive?

Because the clips I'm trying to use are on an external hd and I've tried with other files which are on the Mac HD and they seem work properly.

Now I'll transfer those files on the Mac HD and then I'll try to run iMovie again.

After this try I think the problem is about the files I'm trying to use.

I just tried to add files from last year (taken with another Nikon and with a Samsung video camera) and it seems it doesn't crash.

I really can't understand what's happening! Could it be a compatibility issue?

Maybe it has problem with this kind of files from my camera (it's a Nikon D5200).

I must take some new videos and than try to import them.

EDIT: yes, I can confirm it's a problem with those files taken with Nikon D5200. What can I do?
