Q: Problem with a external hard drive with the Photo Library and iMovie

Hello everybody, before i put my Photo Library to the external hard drive I saw my Photo Library at iMovie but now, no. Do anybody can help me ?

Hello,

I'm Yannis Mischler, a young French (Yaya15) and I have a problem with my external hard drive with my Photo Library and iMovie (10.10.9).

In fact, before I put my Photo Library in the external hard drive, I can see my Photo Library in the iMovie's window and I made a film. But now, my Photo Library is in this external hard drive and my Photo Library isn't in the iMovie's window.

So what can I do ?

Thank you for your help.

    Greetings Yannis,

So let me be sure I understand you correctly. You are using the Photos and iMovie apps on your MacBook Air which is running Mac OS X 10.10.4 (Yosemite). Originally iMovie was able to see and work with the media in Photos but since moving the library to the external hard drive,  iMovie no longer has it available. Is this correct?

It sounds as if your system no longer recognizes your Photos Library as the System Photo Library, which is what makes it available to other applications, notably in your case - iMovie. The following article describes how to designate a System Photo Library - Designate a System Photo Library in Photos.

The steps you should take, specifically -

Follow these steps to designate a System Photo Library:

    1. Quit Photos.
    2. Hold down the Option key, then open Photos. One of the photo libraries is already designated as YourLibraryName (System Photo Library).
    3. Choose the library you want to designate as the System Photo Library.
    4. After Photos opens the library, choose Photos > Preferences from the menu bar.
    5. Click the General tab.
    6. Click the Use as System Photo Library button.

     Photos Preferences

Note - when selecting the System Photo Library you need to choose the one on your external hard drive.

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

    Be well.

    Hello,

Thank you for your help. I already changed the library location but I didn't click on the "use as System Photo Library".

    Now it works fine.

    Have a good afternoon.

    Hi Yannis,

I am delighted to hear that you have your Photos available in iMovie again.

    Best to you.
