Be aware that the highest iOS the iPhone 4 (not the s model) can run is iOS 7.1.2 so if you are already on the version, you can update no further.

After your phone is unlocked you have to do a complete reinstall of the operating system, not just a so called "software update". The instructions are in this article. You will have to start reading the article (do it on your iPad) and then open the links contained within the article for the specific steps.
You can do this through iCloud or iTunes but since you don't have a computer choose the iCloud route. This will allow you to use your new unlocked phone.
