imap delete from phone not from pc

I have my work emails that come through to my phone but also on my PC. Both accounts are setup as IMAP.

Within the mail settings of this account on my phone "Delete from server" is set to never.

Does this mean if I delete messages off my iPhone this will not delete them from my PC

Note: The above scenario is how I would like it to work so I can clear my phone and keep on my pc.

Thanks,

iPhone 5, iOS 8.4.1

If you have a "Delete from server" option, then you do NOT have it set up as IMAP. That is not an option on IMAP, only on POP3.

No, the emails would not be there. IMAP fully synchronizes between the server and all clients. If you delete the IMAP account, all of the folders and the messages they contain will disappear from that client.

You really don't want to use POP if you use multiple clients. IMAP is much better suited to that. If you want to keep messages but don't want them clogging up the inbox, then move them into folders to file them. Remember that any changes you make on any IMAP client will be reflected on all other IMAP clients. Mixing POP and IMAP clients on the same host can really hose things up.

Thanks for your help with this.

I really only use my phone for any emails that come in when I am out of the office. Ideally, I want to turn the PC on and all emails download and remove them from my phone.

For this I would assume its POP3 on my laptop copy all emails from my IMAP folders into folders on the POP3 account and then delete the IMAP one from my laptop. I would then untick keep a copy on the server in my POP3 settings.

Then delete the POP3 from my phone and reinstall as IMAP.

This way I should get emails on my laptop when Outlook is open and on my phone when I'm out the office. I know its a mess to do but once done should have the setup I want.

Hi Ivrie,

Tim has pretty well settled the issue between iMAP an POP and as he said you do not want to mix the accounts. Here is what I would do. Don't know what kind of IMAP account you have (I have Yahoo) but Gmail and others should behave about the same.

I just went to my computer which was logged on to Yahoo Mail. Yours may/will be somewhat different if you are not using Yahoo but you will get the drift. I added a folder under my "Folders" drop down, created a new folder called Test, and then added an email from my Trash to Test. Then I went to my iPhone and did a hard reboot as follows: "Hold down the Home and Wake/Sleep buttons at the same time for about 15-20 seconds until the Apple logo appears. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it comes up. You will not lose anything."

After the reboot, as expected, I could see the new Test folder on my iPhone (you will need the reboot first) and Test contained the junk email I had added. I then deleted the junk message from Test on my iPhone. Then I went to my computer and looked under Test and the junk email I had just deleted on the phone was gone. All of this was as expected, no surprises there, just wanted to insure before I replied to you.

My suggestion is that you do the same, move your less desirable messages (not your trash) into the "Test" folder (named as you please). This, again as expected, will not affect your ability to Trash messages and thus all will be synced across without cluttering your Inbox.

That is my recommendation. I hope it works for you as well...

I was typing my message above as you were typing yours. As Tim said, you do not want to mix IMAP and POP accounts. You can try of course but you are not likely to get the results you want.... I fail to see the issue with having emails on your phone. Unless you get a lot of large attachments, they hardly take any space at all and even with the attachments, if you don't open them they will not clog up your phone usable memory. The attachment memory clears over time as the emails age. But good luck anyway, hope you can get it set up as you want...

Best,

Thanks elcpu,

The reason this came along is primarily because I only had 600mb left one my phone with 1gb being emails (bearing in mind I'm running pop3 on my phone)

I don't really need old emails to be accessible on my phone but I do "like" to see any that come in when I'm out the office in the evenings/weekends (I also don't like seeing the red bubble with unattended items I'm a bit odd like that) I do however want to come in the office and have those emails unread ready to action.

I appreciate this isn't how everyone likes to use their phones they are personal to each of us this is just the setup I like.

This way, my idea being when I open my laptop the emails download and come off my phone and I will only see new ones which if they need dealing with straight away I can and if not leave till I get in.

Thanks
