Q: Kernel panic after installing a third party battery in my late 2008 macbook pro.  Coincidence?

I Installed a 3rd party from macbookbatteries and have been getting a kernel panic screen pretty consistently ever since I did so (last week). Unfortunately, I already ditched my old battery....I also just tried to start it without the battery in, and am getting the screen still.  how likely is it that this. Is. Just coincidence?  Would it be worth it to purchase a new battery through Apple, to try?  I live in a very rural area, and just taking it somewhere where they can check it out isnt much of an option.  Any suggestions?

Use these instructions to log and post the kernel panic report:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201753

It may offer information what is causing them.

    Ciao.

UGh.  Now it wont even get passed that screen, and just keeps restarting (won't even start in safe mode)....i think I'm going to have to find someone to look at it.  Thanks for your response though.

Try resetting the SMC and the NVRAM:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063

Then try the safe boot again:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

    Any change?

    Ciao.

I never was able to start it in safe mode, but it did decide to start up - and stay long enough to get a report:

The kernel panic report suggests problems with the GPU.  Your best option is an appointment at an Apple genius bar, have them test the MBP and confirm if my diagnosis is correct.  Bring the kernel panic report with you.

    Ciao.

The panic report indicates a failing logic board. Whether it's a coincidence that you just installed a battery, I don't know. Apple won't fix it for you (unless you happen to be in California) because it's too old. Consider whether it's time to retire the machine.

Thanks - nearest genius bar is 300+ miles away so.....not a really viable option.  I appreciate the feedback.

I Think that's probably going to be the option.  Will try to pull the few things I need that I don't have backed up....thank you for your input.
