imovie 10.0.9 can't split audio clip... help!
I have already created a project... so that's not the problem. The "split clip" option is greyed out entirely. Please help! I'm losing my mind!

Hello kymbix,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
If you are unable to split a clip in your iMovie project, then you might not have selected the proper clip in the project itself. In order to split a clip please follow the directions below.
Split a clip
In the timeline, select the clip you want to split.
Position the playhead where you want to split the clip.
Choose Modify > Split Clip.
Move and split clips - iMovie Help
Have a good one.

Thank you for your input, Alex. I already did have the clip selected (yellow border visible around the clip in the timeline within the project). The option at Modify > Split Clip is still greyed out. Any other suggestions?
Thank you very much. This helped me figure it out. The diamonds are apparently the keyframes. When I held down on the option/click they would turn gold or stay grey. I think what was happening is I was trying to capture too small an area. I made the area little bigger then was able to capture the audio in the center. I always discovered that I first had to define the area (gold diamonds) then click again inside to make grey ones. The grey ones I could then move down. Worked ... though not very elegant I managed to eliminate the burp and had a split sec of silence... could actually fix it by copying a second and pasting under, but it's acceptable. This isn't broadcast quality .... gary jamesgang creative
To reduce the volume over a short interval of audio expand the project timeline to its maximum (slider top right above project pane) then select a range that covers the sound you want to remove. Then just pull the volume (black line in the audio track) down. For details see: http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov3b5ded23e adjust audio over time using waveforms

Hi kymbix,
I just want to make sure that you're clicking once in the clip that you want to split. That will position the white vertical playhead where the split will take place in your clip. Only once your playhead is in a position over your selected clip is when you can split a clip.
Take care.
Back in the olden days circa 2010, I could edit or drop audio out if there was a burp, or noise for one second. All I can do now is continue to try and click on the audio after I separate it from the play track. The "superduper" clip trimmer shows me a black box with an arrow so that's useless. And I am able to split the clip but I can't zoom in close enough to just take out an "um." Help!
I've tried this repeatedly. Sliding as large as it can be is still very small for what I need to do. I am literally trying to take out an "um." I have tried SHIFT click to see a diamond show up on both sides of the sound, but no matter what I do, I lower the audio on either side of the diamonds, but never the sound inside the diamonds. If I hover over the area a grey diamond appears, but holding down shift, space, control, option, command or the toggle doesn't seem to move it. What is the trick to capture the bit INSIDE those diamonds? Should they both be yellow? Or grey? or one grey one yellow? Or....???? Thanks in advance.
I was in the same hole for a while until I realized that I was trying to do trimming and splitting while in the New Event mode. Actually, you need to go to a New Project mode and there you can do all of that.
I had been doing all those things... thanks. Weird thing is, I went and rebooted everything three times, and now it seems to be working okay. Hmmm... strange. Anyhow, thank you for your input!
