IOS 8.4.1 Update has stopped my iPhone 5 making ringing sound on incoming calls

Until recently pre IOS 8.4.1 update my iPhone 5 has always rung correctly when getting an incoming telephone call.

Now all I get is the vibration buzz buzz buzz .... buzz buzz buzz

I have not set it to mute or set the switch on the side to mute.

I have not set "do not disturb" to manual on and it not in its normal "do not disturb" period (the time is right on the iPhone clock and set to the correct time zone as well!)

The ring volume is set to maximum. I get the icon to prove it all dashes are lit and the bell is not crossed out.

Everyting else that makes a noise works, incoming email, messages all make a noise.

I can play music on it

I get the key clicks when I enter letters

If I have the bluetooth on or off the effect is the same.

It used to work through my car audio as well.

I get no ring through the car audio when connected with bluetooth yet I hear the call perfectly will through car speakers both outgoing and incoming.

I play music through the bluetooth car speakers

All I get when an incoming call is ringing me is BUZZ BUZZ BUZZ - no rings.

If I set the ring tone it makes the sound whilst I am setting it or testing it,

It just doesn't ring on a straight forward incoming call,

Have any others had this problem?

iPhone 5, iOS 8.4.1, null

dissc,

Try a hard reboot first. Hold down the Home and Wake/Sleep buttons at the same time for about 15-20 seconds until the Apple logo appears. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it comes up. You will not lose anything.

Updates can at times change some settings inexplicably, I have seen so several times. Also please try: Settings > General > Accessibility > Call Audio Routing (toward the bottom) and check to make sure it is set to Automatic.

If the above does not work we can try various types of resets but please post back after the above and I / we will take it from there. 🙂

MY take on this problem is this:

because al other sound pathways work and the ringing sound can be produced by changing the ring tone back and forth it is not likely to be a hardware issue. If the mute switch or ring volume controlled were at fault then the other sound options like messaging would also not make a sound.

the only point of failure is when an incoming call is received.

so, in my case this must be a software fault.

The basic reset isn't clearing the problem so the underling code that causes the ring to happen when a call arrives is corrupted or has had a bug introduced in the new release. However, there is also the possibility of a bug masking issue. If the bug pre-exists the update but some change elsewhere has activated the bug.

The only thing I can do now is do a factory reset, test the phone to see if it rings, then do a restore from backup and test it again.

Ok, I haven't touched my phone for 24 hours. It has started to ring again. The old fashioned phone ring and the marimba rings have worked again,

I don't believe in ghosts or coincidence.

So, what could have happened?

I have done nothing to my phone settings wise since I last communicated.

I am still at home so I am in the same location where I had the problem.

I haven't let the phone go flat - I left it on charge overnight. [I had the problem when the phone was fully charged and on its last 1% so its not a battery saving situation].

I haven't dropped it or shaken it - its been sitting on my wireless charger on the desk and rang for the first time in three days from my desk ten minutes ago!!!

So, if its an intermittent bug, its going to be hard to find.

As I say I don't believe in chance and I haven't done anything to change the situation.

Suggestions?

IT would seem to be the only option unless your phone randomly starts to work like mine. The jury is still out on that - I will be keeping an eye on my phone over the next week to see if the ring goes away again!

your problem is slightly different to mine but probably also a software issue. Most controls are software managed (I write IOS code for a living!) but as to where in the software/firmware that is a job for apple to sort out!

if you are confident that you have a full recent backup of your phone then I would go ahead.

however, after the factory reset. Check that the volume on your calls works correctly.

before you restore your phone upgrade to 8.4.1 and test the volume again if that fails to work it may gave us a clue as to what's going wrong.

then do a restore -again test the volume afterwards - it fails it may point to a conflict with a setting or app on your phone Instance.

if that happens then do it all again and don't do the upgrade to 8.4.1.

sorry it's quite a long job but at least you will get a useable phone back!
