Q: Yosemie 10.10.5 hangs up during instalation and imac eventually shuts down

I downloaded Yosemite 10.10.5 from Apple support. Couldn't download it from Apps Store. During installation it stops at about 1/3 of the way and after a moment my iMac screen goes black. Any clues?

iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2011), Mac OS X (10.5.5)

I understand that you are unable to install an OS X update and now your screen is black. I would suggest going through the troubleshooting steps in the article below for this issue.

However, it's more than a black screen. My iMac crashes. I should have been clearer in my meaning. I'm reloading Yosemite from the internet using the apple emergency partition. Hoping that what I'm experiencing was a corruptOX file first time.
