the home button on my IPad does not remove the current application and display my home screen

Hey Buddy,

I had that problem too...

i solved it by resetting iPad

Resetting doesn't remove your data and apps

To Reset: - Press and HOLD Home + Power button and don't leave it even if power off slider shows on the screen

continue holding down the keys until iPad automatically shuts down and boots up to show the Apple Logo
