Q: Bootcamp problem: Yosemite 10.10.5, Windows 8.1

Trying to install Windows 8.1 on iMac (27-inch, Late 2013) running OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.5

Created Windows 8.1 iso image, sitting on Mac desktop

32GB clean formatted (Mac OS Extended (Journaled)) USB 3.0 plugged in

Run Bootcamp Assistant to set up

Get to the screen to Create Bootable USB Drive for Windows Installation and select Continue

Get the response: "Your bootable USB drive could not be created - There is not enough space available in the disk"

As I said, this is a freshly formatted USB drive with 32GB free...

Can anyone help? Thanks!

USB3 will not work. Please use a USB2 Flash drive 8 GB or larger.

This is because Windows 7, 8 and 10 installers do not have USB3 drivers. They are installed after BC drivers are fully installed.

Ok, so I ran out and bought a 32GB USB 2.0 thumb drive. Attached is an image from Disk Utility describing it. But Bootcamp still fails (see other image).

Not sure what to do now...

This will fail. You need to erase and reformat the USB as a MSDOS(FAT) partition. Windows and BC Assistant will not work with a Mac OSX Extended Journaled disk.

Please disconnect all external storage. Do not use any hubs. Connect the USB directly to the Mac. Please retry.

Disconnected all but power, ethernet, and USB 2.0. Rebooted. Same result...

Was the current ISO created from a physical DVD or downloaded from somewhere? You may also want to check the integrity of the ISO by verifying MD5sum with the source you got it from. There have been a few cases of corrupted ISOs downloaded from M$ or other sources.

I created the media on a PC using the MS media creator SW. I've also deleted it and recreated it (also from the MS site)

Yes. Please see https://support.apple.com/kb/PH20577?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US , but it does require getting the ISO to the Mac over the network. Please verify the source and destination MD5Sum to ensure data integrity.
