Q: macbook air overheating - 2015

Recently I've gone on holiday and have taken my macbook air 13" (2014) with me as it stores a lot of my personal information on it and is useful for me accessing the internet, however since i had to turn it off to go through customs and also whilst on the plane I've turned it back on and found that within 20 - 45 minutes the bottom of the macbook starts to become very hot (extremely, also haven't been able to get the actual temperature of the device at this time) and uncomfortable to hold, this also happens when on idle until i shut down the macbook and this can happen when no programs are running at least none that i can tell (i make sure all of the programs that i open don't sit in the background or are left open) and was hoping for some answers on the matter.
