2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo >

yep, it’s old but I love iMovie and haven’t figured out ‘new Mavericks’ version yet.

Problem is ‘puter heats up quickly (don’t think the fan even comes on?)

Hot to the touch on top left side if facing screen.

Using GB or IMovie will suddenly get horizontal lines and the color ‘artifacts’ and then crash.

Can only use about 7 minutes most.

Is this ‘normal old age problem’ too costly to fix ? logic board or ?

Suggestions ?

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5), Processor 2.9 GHz Intel Core i5

It could be the logic board, the fans, the graphic card - any number of things. The machine is 8 years old. Is this it:

You can try the Apple Hardware Test included on your install disk #2 - run it in extended mode at least twice or three times in a row. It is not 100% failsafe though. You can also make an appointment at your nearest Genius Bar for diagnostics which are free. In any case, if anything is found, the repair costs would not be worthwhile in my opinion.

And, FWIW, Mavericks is not the current system: Yosemite is and el Capitan has been announced for a bit later this year. The old version of iMovie will no longer work in any new OS and Garageband (as well as all other apps) will need to be updated/upgraded/purchased. Also note that PPC apps have not worked in Intel machines for several years, so it would be a major change for you.

Well then, you'd have to look for a used older model if/when yours decides to pass away. Make sure you keep current backups of your files. One thing you might try is the Snow Leopard OS - it will still run older apps and (in my humble opinion) was the best OS ever. Machines up to/including early/mid 2010 will run Snow Leopard and you can still buy it at the online Apple Store for less than $20.

Again, excellent info re Snow Leopard.

Sounds like my preferred iMovie and GB will work.

Need to research the actual computers in regard to internal microphone/audio - not sure what it is but I have both computer's next to each other

and my voice is different on each one using 'no effects' ,and I usually like the older version best (maybe just used to it that way, but it makes a difference).

Thaks again !
