No airplay icon appears on my Macbook Pro

No airplay icon appears on my Macbook Pro, it's an OS X Lion 10.7.5 from late 2011. The Airplay works for iTunes movies from my Mac, but screen mirroring does not and no Airplay icon appears in the toolbar at the top of the Mac screen. My Apple TV is brand new. How do I fix this?

I am wanting to watch region 2 DVDs from VLC on my Mac and have them Airplay to the Apple TV. Changing the region code on my mac isn't an option, as if I change it, it will permanently be region 2 (I used to live abroad and this is the last time for changing it)

About AirPlay and Airplay Mirroring

AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). For non-qualifying Macs you can try using Air Parrot.

Thanks to the $15 Beamer, AirPlay streaming is still possible on Macs that do not support Airplay and mirroring.

Other solutions are the Air Parrot, StreamToMe, and AirServer.
