Q: Maps will not render

In the last week or so, Maps has stopped rendering images. It does not work on my account, but the app does work on the Guest account - implying that whatever the problem is, it is in ~, not Applications, I guess.  Also, when I try to 'report an error' <apps reports that I am not connected to the internet - though other applications work just fine.

I have looked for any file in ~/Library/* that have maps in their name, but I could only find a one (~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Maps). I deleted that folder, and restarted but it made no difference.

So, given that it works with one account but not my account, I am guessing perhaps a preference file is corrupted. But where is the preference file? I have been unable to identify another file that changes as Maps closes, and therefore might be a preference file.

Any advice?

Thanks in anticipation.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then launch Maps. Select any lines that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name or email address, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Thanks for this suggestion. I am at work right now.

I'll try what you suggest,  for both my-account-doesn't-work and Guest-account-does-work and get back to you later today.

I examined the console log. It seems that there were many lines similar to:
    8/21/15 10:33:03.988 PM sandboxd[318]: ([12244]) com.apple.geod(12244) deny file-write-create /scratch/Cache_files_etc/

I had used a symbolic link to take my cache files out of ~/Library and put them into a scratch directory (so that they can be more easily excluded from backups).

However, the repeated lines in the log indicated that having moved the location of the cache files might have caused a problem. I put the cache files back where they originated; that by itself did not work; but after a restart, it did work.

    Thanks
