When I tried uploading the latest OSX Lion the Mac crashed. I have an encrypted hard drive and have to restore to factory settings. So far, even with the help of Apple, I have been unsuccessful due to the encryption. If a Mac cannot be restored if disc is encrypted than why is it even an option? Help!

I tried this but under the option File, the Turn Off Encryption option is grey, not black, so the option cannot be checked.
Have you tried System Preferences/Security & Privacy/FileVault to see if you can turn it off there?
Turn off disk encryption (FileVault 2) and you should be able to restore to factory settings.

Dupe—ignore.
If that doesn't work, boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility/File/Turn Off Encryption.
I also went to Disk Utility, Macintosh HD, Partition, File-Turn off encryption (an option in black not grey) clicked and nothing happened. Still encrypted.
