Q: Screen goes black randomly- OS X Yosemite on 2015 Mac Book Pro

I just purchased at 2015 13" Mac Pro a little over 3 weeks ago.  I'm running OS X Yosemite that is fully update as of yesterday.  About 4 times in the past week, the screen has randomly gone black AND the trackpad seems to be "disabled."  When i click on the trackpad I feel nothing! I hear no clicking noise and don't even FEEL like I'm clicking.  After about 20 seconds the screen comes back and the trackpad works normally again.  This is very weird and I feel extremely annoyed.  If this happened within the first 2 weeks of purchase I would have just returned this machine.

Can someone please enlighten me as to why this is happening and what I can do about it.  Is this a known issue/bug of OS X Yosemite? I have read other forums and answers on issues similar to this but I am still confused as to the reason and fix.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities

We're not aware of any bug related to that in OS X Yosemite, and this forum would be full of posts like yours if it was a bug.

Your MacBook is in warranty, so I suggest you to take it to an Apple Store or reseller to get the MacBook Pro diagnosed and repaired for free (if you did not cause the issue) because this looks like a hardware problem.

Ok.  Fair enough.  But how do I even prove to them that this is happening.

Try recording a video of the problem and showing it to the Genius.

LOL...I don't know if that was supposed to be a joke, but regardless, I like you already.  Is there any way I can run diagnostics on the computer myself?

Believe me it was a serious reply .

Good question. You can use Apple Diagnostics to see if something weird is happening with your Mac. To run it, you only have to plug the MacBook to the charger and hold down both Alt and D keys while your Mac is starting up, so Apple Diagnostics will be downloaded from Apple servers and it will run a diagnostic. Tell us if it shows any error message at the end.

You are welcome. Note that you can use the error code Apple Diagnostics gives you to get the Mac repaired

I just ran diagnostics; it stated that there were no errors found.  I am going to take a video of the problem , because I know that they will not believe me.

Once again, your help was greatly appreciated.  Have a wonderful evening.

Thank you for posting and: no I have not.  The issue has become worse and the "blackout" occurs for longer durations as well.  Today, for instance, the computer was FULLY charged and would not come out of sleep for 1.5 minutes no matter what I pressed. (I have video evidence of this).  Furthermore, the sudden "blackout" duration has excelled from approximately ten seconds to thirty seconds.  I have three videos in evidence of this.

I have an appointment at the Apple Store on Sunday and I am demanding an exchange, I suggest you do the same.

If an exchange is not immediately given to me, I will be sending a formal demand letter to Apple now that I have substantial evidence. As of this moment,  I feel like I just threw $2000 down the drain and it is really bothering me.  We all buy Apple products because we trust they are reliable and we do not want to worry if our computers will work properly at critical times.     I find it UNREASONABLE to believe that Apple does not know about this issue. I have spoken with multiple Apple reps and they act as if they have never encountered a problem like this one before.

I figured out my problem.  I have an InCase sleeve case for my macbook and it has a magnetic strip to hold the edge of the case together.  When the left side of the notebook is sitting on that magnetic strip, it is telling the notebook screen, backlit keyboard, and trackpad to shut down as if the computer is closing.  I have not had the problem since I quit putting the MacBook on that sleeve! I hope this helps!

I was freaking out too because mine is only 4 days old!  Let me know if this helps!

    Good Luck!!

I had the exact same problem today with  my macbook 12 inch.  I also recently purchased the same InCase Sleeve (https://www.incase.com/shop/products/sleeves/macbook-sleeves)  .  Thanks for solving my problem!  Definitely the magnet.

Wow Im so glad I read this.

Its been driving me crazy, but I constantly have the case under the macbook.

Im going to return the case to get a more traditional one.

Ever since I stopped using the case below, the problem stopped occurring.

    Thanks!
