I recently purchased a used 5S. The owner says it's unlocked but when my carrier tried to activate, it won't accept T-Mobile's SIM.
They say it's locked! How can I check? Thank you.

It's pretty simple really. If you put in a T-Mobile SIM and got an error that the SIM was not recognized and please insert a SIM from your carrier, then it's locked. That IS the ultimate test for an unlocked phone - does it or does it not recognize any randomly chosen SIM. Contact the seller and get your money back.
