Not sure if they will work with the 80GB (5.5Gen) versions of the iPods as they weren't out when this version of the iPod software was available, so use at your own risk...

Thanks for the links.

A question. You say try this at your own risk. Does this mean that if it doesn't work I will be unable to load back on the the 1.2 firmware to at least get it to work with the music that was loaded on the first time it was connected, ie the one & only successful sync ?

I'm going to persevere with the Mac as I just love the quality of the hardware. It wont ever replace all my Windows needs allthough I'm running some tests at the moment to see how good Boot Camp vs Parallels is. So far for everyday use Parralels is winning. Amazed at the speed it runs Windows XP.

It shouldn't do anything other than not work with your iPod if it is not compatable. Or it might say that the firmware isn't suitable for it. You can always upgrade back to the 1.2 firmware using iTunes as normal. All of your music will remain on your computer, but you will have to erase the iPod in order to 'downgrade' it to the earlier firmware. All I am saying is I cannot try this for you and have not tried it myself as my iPod is one of the earlier models (60GB Video). Otherwise I could reasure you more.
As far as bootcamp is concerned I would love to have a go, my machine is a PowerPC so my only option to run windaz is through an emulator like Virtual PC etc. I am thinking of upgrading when Leapard is released in the future.

I seem to have fixed my error -48 problem

What I did was enabled Disk Use, closed iTunes, opened Disk Utility, selected my iPod from the left hand column, chose the Erase tab, but then chose Security Options and told it to write Zero's to the iPod hard drive. It took about 45mins for my 30GB iPod. Since I've done that it synch's perfect everytime, even with Photo's enabled.

Yup same probelm for me, almost exactly the same symptoms.
now the iPod doesn't like to turn back on unless I give it about a half hour 'rest' after it locks up with itunes.

other symptoms I'm getting now are:-
if iPod comes to life it will work for about 20 seconds then lock up, scroll wheel & buttons not working, but getting clicks from buttons

also had one very stange event, after reset (about number 100!) I connected it to itunes (v7.0.2) and got a message along the lines of 'you ipod is corrupt and needs to be updated to firmware version 1.5'

what happened to versions 1.3 & 1.4??

The update started (download icon showing) I though GREAT they've fixed it. then the download stopped and itunes locked up.

Now if I try to restore the iPod it locks up itunes and the machine has to be restarted before I can re-start itunes (this is on PC running XP)

FANTASTIC....This work around has worked for me on my new 80Gb iPod too. Now syncs beautifully. Only thing that's strange is that I now have 5.7Gb of "Other" stuff showing up on the capacity bar in iTunes. I havn't a clue what makes up the 5.7 Gb. It's ominous though that it is very close in size to what was on the Ipod before I performed your work around.

Any ideas how I might get rid of this "other" stuff and reclaim the disc space ?

I have to say its a pretty poor show by Apple not to have fixed this quickly as its pretty apparent that this is affecting a good number of people.

Still I'm mighty impressed with the new imac !

Is the other stuff represented as an amount of orange space? This is normal. It represents the system software, contacts information and any album artwork and anything else in the machine that is not audio, video or a photo I believe. I do think 5.7GB is a large amount though. On my 60GB machine I have 30.74GB audio, 943.1MB video, 776.1MB other and 23.39GB free space. My advise is to start again with a restore then a wipe with disk utility just to be safe.

Hi Libertine 1982, welcome to the -48 Error club. I bought a new 30gb iPod last wednesday (my first iPod). I came home loaded all my iTunes onto it with no problem! Then after buying a new album on iTunes I went to update the iPod and got exactly the same screen as you! I ended up taking it back to the dealer and after they updated the software and restored it, it seemed to work fine. However I wasn't so sure. I had taken my iBook G4 in with me and gave it a quick go before leaving the shop. Same thing happened. I ended up getting a new iPod as the guy was totally mystified! I posted a question on the iBook forum to see if this was an iBook issue but didn't really get any decent response. So I copied all my iTunes over to my Mac Mini G4. I thought that if it was an iBook issue it would be solved by using a different Mac. Not so. Same thing happened. Copied the tunes over onto a brand new Mac and when I went to update I got the same thing. So my iPod has to be restored from scratch any time I update my main library. I don't know if I have a corrupt song in there somewhere but there's no way I am trawling through 2,500 songs to find out! I am using all the latest software (OSX 10.4.8 + iTunes 7.0.2). So I can't answer your question I am afraid, but I will be working on it.

ok...my first 30GB collapsed and they said it cost to repair close enough as a new one...so i purchased a 80GB...have uploaeded 4000 songs approx and now i have the same (unknown error -48) thingy occured!! grrrr frustrating....

so just to make it clear: do we just wait and see on the progress? is there any point in going in the apple store for a new 80GB or what?

cheers for the help!!

sorry to hear that we're going through this but felt a relief that i wasnt alone and much appreciating this messageboard!!
