Q: My update OS X Yosemite 10.10.5 will not complete.

Every time it gets to the end of the restart countdown, I get a message saying there are other updates available. When I click to see details, it shows 10.10.5, and directly below that, it shows 10.10.5 has been downloaded multiple times in the last 30 days. No idea to remove the extras or complete the update.

Try downloading the 10.10.5 combo update and installing it. Optionally see how to verify the legitimacy of the downloaded update.

I will try Linc's suggestion, but he also suggests backing everything up before I begin. I do not have an external hard drive. Can I backup on the cloud?

That would take hours, and do you have the space there for a full backup.

Honestly just download the Combo from here,Apple - Support - Downloads

I tried that, and the same thing happened. I keep getting the "available updates have changed" message at the end of the restart countdown. It shows that it's downloaded 11 times in the last 30 days, but under "about this mac" it still shows 10.10.4.

I gave you a link to Apple Support download pages where you will see the Combo update, this is an alternative to using the App Store which is giving you problems.

It should be a simple matter of downloading the Combo, and once downloaded double click to start the installation. There will be no mention of 'available updates have changed' using this method.

I thought at first that this didn't work, because I got the same "available updates have changed" message at the end of the restart countdown. I gave up and closed my computer, but forgot to turn it off. When I opened it this morning, I had a message that it had been unable to complete the update because safari had quit. I opened firefox, got the restart message, and this time it went through the whole process. Still don't know what happened, but thank you! I can already tell that things are running better.

Before I saw your reply, I gave up and shut my computer. I forgot to turn it off, and when I opened it today, I had a message that the updates were unable to install because safari had quit. (I usually use firefox, but switched to safari thinking that might help). I opened firefox and got the restart notification, where everything usually quits, but my computer restarted and completed the installation this time. OSX enthusiast's reply earlier also contained a link to the combo update, which I'm assuming is the same as the one you posted for me. I still don't know why it worked or why it took so long to finish, but it's done and I see a difference in how things are running already. Thank you for taking the time to explain things so simply and continuing to check on me!
