Q: Install Windows 7; keyboard mouse unresponsive during installation

Hi all,

I am trying to install Window 7+SP1 X64 on my iMac 21.5 inch 2.7 GHz with OSX Yosemitee 10.10.5 and bootcamp 5.1.4.

I followed all the steps as stated bij apple (so select al three options, e.g. make install disk, download windows software and install Windows 7 or higher, and yes, also a USB 2.0 flash disk) and get stuck at the windows installer screen where you have to select language etc. Problem: mouse and keyboard (tried bluetooth and wired) unresponsive. I found several tips on this forum, but they do not work for me : MBA Mid 2013 - Bootcamp Windows 7 - Changing Partitions - What a mess!  MacBook Air 2013 Windows 7 freezes during installation

iMac 27 5K Bootcamp no keyboard or mouse

I know the problem is driver related (e.g. USB 3.0). Funny thing is that I can get into Windows Safe Mode bij pressing F8 during boot in windows, so the keyboard /mouse drivers are not working in the install mode.

I could use some help

Sincerely

    Hi Loner,

TX for help. Did the following:

    - Reset SMC

    - Reset NVRAM

    - Run bootcamp the classic way, with all three boxes checked and 16 Gb USB 2.0

    - After partitioning and reboot the message "no-bootable device-insert boot disk and press any key"

    - Pushed power button for 5 sec to turn iMac off, then restart and pressed "option" key, then selected the windows bootable device (the USB-key)

    - message "booting from bootcamp created USB"

    - message "windows is loading files"

    - starting windows->blue  windows install screen (to select language etc.)-> no cursor, mouse/keyboard unresponsive

Problem remains that in windows installer the drivers for the mouse/keyboard are missing.  Any other suggestions?

Would it be better to instal Windows 10 directly using bootcamp? I would eventually upgrade the Windows 7 to Win 10 anyway, and if it is easier to directly instal Win10 using bootcamp instead of going through all the trouble to install Win 7 and then upgrade to 10, I'd be happy to happy 100 euro for Win 10

Does your iMac have a built-in Optical drive? If yes, unless you are using a 2012 iMac, USB booting will not work. Did you modify Bootcamp info.plist.

    Hi Loner,

    1. No built in optical drive (I have an external USB drive from Asus, also tried that in combination with the USB stick, doesn't work)

    2.  iMac21.5 end 2013

    3. I have never modified the Bootcamp info.plist, and do not know what to modify there

You can use the external USB to build the USB installer, but you will not be able to use it for booting from the physical DVD (Apple SuperDrive is recommended).

If you are using a 16GB USB2, you should disconnect all other storage. If BT Keyboard/Mouse do not work, try a wired KM. The USB must be directly connected to the Mac. You should not use any hubs.

    - starting windows->blue  windows install screen (to select language etc.)-> no cursor, mouse/keyboard unresponsive

Problem remains that in windows installer the drivers for the mouse/keyboard are missing.  Any other suggestions?

You may need SMC Reset and NVRAM reset before this attempt. Each attempt leaves information which interferes with the next attempt.

    Hi Loner,

Appreciate your input; as I said earlier, I have done the following:

    - Reset SMC

    - Reset NVRAM

    - Run bootcamp the classic way, with all three boxes checked and 16 Gb USB 2.0 without a hub (NO OTHER DEVICES CONNECTED)

    - starting windows->blue  windows install screen (to select language etc.)-> no cursor, mouse/keyboard unresponsive (BT mouse/keyboard unresponsive; plugged in USB mouse+keyboard->no response)

I will try later tonite (its afternoon here) to do a Reset SMC+NVRAM again and whole bootcamp procedure with a wired key+mouse from the start, but I am afraid it will not help.

Problem remains that in windows installer the drivers for the mouse/keyboard are missing.  Any other suggestions?

Can you check your USB and post the listing of directories under the $WinPEDriver$ directory?

    Hi Loner,

OK, I tried it again with the folowing sequence:

    - Reset theSMC

    - Reset the NVRAM

    - Run bootcamp 5.1.4 the classic way, with all three boxes checked and 16 Gb USB 2.0 inserted, as well as a wired keyboard and mouse, all directly into the iMac late 2013. I selected the Windows 7 Pro X64+SP1 iso on my desktop and pressed continue.

    - the (already in FAT32 formatted) USB disk was formatted and the windowsfiles copied onto the USB

    • Checked the directories in the $WinPEDriver$ directory:
    • Schermafbeelding winped directory.jpg

    - After partitioning and reboot the message "no-bootable device-insert boot disk and press any key"

    - Pushed power button for 5 sec to turn iMac off, then restart and pressed "option" key, then selected the Macintosh HD

    • logged into my OSX and then did a reset of SMC and NVRAM AGAIN, as suggested by loner
    • Restarted iMac and pressed "option" key, then selected the Windows  bootable device (the USB-key)

    - message "booting from bootcamp assistant created USB"

    - message "windows is loading files"

    - starting windows->blue  windows install screen (to select language etc.)-> no cursor, wired mouse/keyboard unresponsive

Addition: I checked the contents of the "SeriallO" subdirectory of the "$WinPEDriver$ directory"; it only contained a directory called "Win8". Could it be that it all does not work cause there is no "Win7" directory?

Could it be that it all does not work cause there is no "Win7" directory and apple bootcamp stopped support of Win7? According to Bootcamp Support page my iMac late 2013 should still be able to instal Win7

    Hi Loner,

I do not get it. You want a different screenshot listing the contents of the win install? If so, what subdirectories do you want to see, there are to many for one image file.

And, i have Bootcamp 5 (and updated OSX, so do not have BC 6)

I should have provided a better explanation. Different versions of Windows and BCA will create different structures. Your WININSTALL is the standard BC6. One suggestion is to move the AppleSSD.sys from $WinPEDriver$ to the Drivers/Apple directory and test.

Sorry, did not work..... Maybe I should just buy and install Win10...
