It's unclear has to who created this issue, Microsoft's upgrade or Apples negligence. Anyways, as I see it Apple stands to loose users, not so much for Microsoft. Why? Because iCloud is the linchpin. I believe for a large number of us iCloud IS what has been holding this Apple/Microsoft relationship together and without it no more Apple. It just doesn't go the other direction. Outlook isn't holding this relationship together, iCloud is. Everything hinges on iCloud. Without it you will find users dumping Apple and going elsewhere. There are too many other options out there that will fix this boondoggle once and for all and the easiest solution is to dump Apple. You won't find many PC users going the other direction and dumping their PC's. Apple, you've forced us to choose sides and I'm afraid for most Apple will be left in the cold. Why? Because Apple is and has been too exclusive. Apple products work great with Apple products but for most of us this exclusively is too limiting. Microsoft still has the majority of the market share so for most we just can't get away from working with a PC but we CAN do without Apple. Apple your undoing will be your focus on exclusivity and your oversight with this iCloud issue.
How many corporations use Apple? Up until now I've been willing to work with both platforms and hardware. I own iPads, iPhones, and MacBooks but I also own gaming PC's and several Window's laptops. My household is a mixed bag which I enjoy. Up until now my Mail, Contacts and Calendar (fundamental basics) were in sync. iCoud held things together. I could easily work between both platforms because I had easy access to my basics. I've devoted a ton of energy toward fixing this issue and it can be fixed but there are no easy fixes. The least difficult solution is to dump Apple. Microsoft Exchange server in fact could reestablish this relationship among others. None of which would be easy or inexpensive. These fixes are just far too troublesome and far too expensive. The bottom line is, I'm ready for a fresh start without Apple. I can do without Apple but I can't do without Microsoft. So, without iCloud I really don't have any need for Apple. Your products are bright and shiny with lots of eye candy and within the narrow and confining world of Apple life appears blissful. However, their is a much bigger world out there Apple. You loose.
The other piece of this relationship is hardware. Of all my hardware the hardware that really holds this relationship together is my iPhone. I have it with me 24/7. Great phone, arguable the best. But, gone are the days where the iPhone dominated. There are now so many options to choose from that are arguable better than an iPhone, at least equal. Again the lack of flexibility which all other phones have is Apple's undoing. My cell phone contract is up and a Samsung Galaxy sounds like a good choice completing this Apple breakup once and for all. Goodbye Apple! I've given you since August to fix this. Your time is up!

Just wanted to let you know that the following workaround worked for me.
I still have iCloud 4.x installed. As soon as I saw the Outlook 2016 warning in Version 5, I made sure not to install it.
Like many of you, the latest Windows update broke it, despite me not using 5.0.
No Calendars; No Contacts. Brutal!
Yet I was now able to fix it.
Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Internet Services
Right click on iCloud.exe, and ensure it's running in Windows 8 Compatibility mode.
I used Task Manager to kill the current iCloud process, and then re-ran it by clicking on the .exe file.
I unchecked the Outlook Sync option in the iCloud Panel, then I re-checked it.
Bingo!
Now I see my 1,900 contacts as well as my two iCloud calendars. Two reminders just went off two. I was really so happy to hear the reminder ding, even though it's after 2:00am and it woke up my girlfriend!
I am a newcomer to the Apple ecosystem, and I have to say I am really disappointed. I really thought Apple's products were supposed to "just work", but really - they never do lately. So many issues and annoyances with every device.
I am still trying to figure out if Apple was always like this, and people were just caught in Job's distortion field, or if Apple DID release near-perfect software and hardware in the past, and all these incessant problems are relatively recent.
I still can't get a definitive answer. It's a shame. Apple makes incredible devices; amazing hardware... but my new Apple TV.... my Watch... iPhone.... this Retina Macbook... each one has had so many annoyances. It seems like I am always waiting for the next iOS or OS X update for one reason or another.
Well, I do hope the workaround works for you.
And I did leave feedback for Apple, too.

Nov 22, 2015 2:10 AM in response to Law_Guyby Ourdoc,The main disappointment is the fact tha Office 2016 was out in open public beta at least 6 months before final release. So Apple had 6 months to work with their software to make sure it didn't break connectivity. On the other hand, there was no open public beta of iCloud for MS to work with.

Totally unacceptable.
Trying to manage via icloud online is horrible. Total loss of productivity.
Its to the point that my cell contract is up this month and I am thinking of selling my iphone and ipad and move to the Galaxy S6. Im sure they dont have issues like this total disregard to compatibility.
Apple needs to get this BS fixed! End of this month im dumping apple if it isnt.
Worst part - Not a darn peep from apple to keep us updated. Just vague BS.

Nov 23, 2015 5:30 AM in response to Law_Guyby tsilves,Thanks this worked for me - I was working with iCloud 4.1.1.53 and broke with the Windows 10 Version 1511 update. This I followed this procedure with the only exception of doing a reboot vs. manually restarting iCloud ... wonder of the act of disabling and re-enabling iCloud for Outlook might have worked by itself?

I have been in contact with a Sr Adviser at Apple, iCloud Team and she reported to me on Wednesday "...I just got notice that there will be support for Outlook 2016 soon so they are working on something."
I think we have their attention and something is going to get done. I cannot tell you how long 'soon' is but I will continue to bird dog this until we get this problem solved.
Has anyone been given an promising response like this from an official source at Apple? It would be good that we keep the contact information for these people handy should this mess go south.
update: Ranmonddenit, no. I have someone at Apple who will let me know and I'll post as soon as I hear from her. Note: the message in the iCloud page for how o use iCloud for Windows, has an updated message saying a release will fix this but no timeframe is in it but 'soon'. I am checking that page every 2 days. Weekly I wrote the Sr Adviser asking for an update. I think the follow up has helped to get Movement on this.

I upgraded from Win 8 to 10 around same time but problem appears to be with Office and iCloud. I spent hours trying to get my calendar to sync. My first CPU worked as soon as I reinstalled Office 2013. The 2nd still wouldn't sync. I reread all of the suggestions on here and de-selected syncing photos in the iCloud settings and deleted the iCloud photos folder and it still didn't work. Then I realized that I had moved all the Windows users folders off my SSD boot drive and on a bigger capacity drive. The iCloud Photos folder it was looking for was on the boot drive and when I finally figured that out and deleted it everything started working.
I can't believe that Apple couldn't test for these conditions in the latest iCloud release and save users thousands of hours of debugging the software. It would be simple for them to flag Office 2016 installations and give a warning instead of letting the software appear to install correctly. I had similiar problems with the release of Office 2013 but expected that they would have had more time to support this release of would be a bit smarter about it.

I finally decided to move to Exchange Online Plan 1 and have my Outlook 2016/Windows 10 working and seamlessly synchronizing all my accounts with all my devices and platforms (PC, MAC, iOS and Android) without any problem. It's just 30GBP per year and it's definitely worth it.

iCloud for Windows currently supports Outlook 2007 through Outlook 2013. Support for Outlook 2016 will be available in an update to iCloud for Windows in December. Until then, if you use Outlook 2016, you can access iCloud Mail, Contacts, and Calendars on iCloud.com.
