Foolproof hub solution?

I have lots of devices, and only four USB slots on the back of my iMac.

The standard solution is to get a hub, right? Well, the past two powered USB hubs had insufficient power to run my external DVD, much the scanner or even an external hard drive or USB stick.

Is there any hub that will reliably allow me to power my onboard devices...AND USB devices? I'm looking for the experts on this one!
