MacBook Pro 13" early 2011, constant crashing

Hi there,

crashing problems go on. Tried to install latest OS Update, couldn't download from my computer via Appstore or direct download, file supposedely corrupted. So download the file at work and tried to install and that caused a complete system crash. Had for the umpteenth to re-install from Timemachine.

The startup drive is failing, or there is some other internal hardware fault.

Back up all data on the drive immediately if you don't already have a current backup. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair

Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

Thank you guys for all your advice. So, I did the Apple Hardware Test (contrary to what Apple says you have to press "alt D" instead of only "D") and I got the following cryptic error message:

That indicates a problem with the RAM. As I indicated earlier, install the original RAM and see if the panics stop.

The third party RAM is either incompatible or is installed incorrectly. Take modules out and clean the contacts. When you seat the module, make certain that it is all the way in.

Or you may make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar and have them confirm the diagnosis.

CMSA16GX3M2A1333C9 and I'm really curious to see if changing from CMSO to CMSA will work. Funny thing...

And even funnier, now back to 4 GB (2 x 2 GB) instead of 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) speed seems the same as before. So it's installing a SSD which makes a Mac faster...

RAM does not increase the speed of a computer. It allows it to run more applications simultaneously or RAM hungry applications more efficiently. This will only become apparent when your Mac needs more that 4 GB RAM.
