Why can't I install iTunes on Windows 10?

I just upgraded to Windows 10 and now I want to download and install iTunes. I've always used it on my previous pc and now I want it on my new pc as well, but somehow I can't install it. When the installation is allmost done, I get the message that there was a problem with my pc, so iTunes didn't install. What do I have to do? And please in normal language, because I don't know al those technical terms 😝 P.S.: I live in Belgium, an answer in Dutch would be awesome ...

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version, or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for performance issues, or for compatibility with QuickTime or third party software on 64-bit systems.

Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there are links to backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

In case it isn't clear this is a user to user support forum. The best I can do is offer advice, I can't influence the iTunes distribution package.

Perhaps while reading the troubleshooting guide you overlooked this passage.

The message "An error occurred during installation of assembly 'Microsoft.VC80.CRT, type="win32", version="8.0.50727.6195", publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b", processorArchitrcture="amd64" ' " may occur because a particular library file is not included in the distribution package supplied with iTunes. Installing the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package MFC Security Update before attempting to reinstall iTunes may help.

The advice seems to have helped others, e.g. Re: apple application support not found error 2

I presume you downloaded the correct version for your processor architecture? I see three different files when I visit the download page.

I don't as yet have a Windows 10 system for testing so my advice is based on feedback from other users. Sometimes using the standalone installer for a particular component works when it otherwise fails when an attempt is made to install it as part of a package. It may help to right-click or ctrl-right-click on the downloaded installer and use a run as administrator option if present and/or temporarily disable any anti-virus software.

I don't know why you are unable to install iTunes at this time, but looking a little deeper into the installer it would seem that Apple Application Support is dependent on the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable libraries. They are included in AppleApplicationSupport.msi which is part of the iTunes setup file. As noted elsewhere others have been able to install the standalone version of the library files, then install iTunes successfully.

See the post Re: Can't install iTunes 12.1 on Windows 7 64-bit. for details on how to break down the main iTunes setup file into individual components, and then install these with verbose logging enabled. The log of AppleApplicationSupport.msi might yield more information as to why it fails, which in turn might suggest a workaround.

Others are clearly able to get iTunes 12.x installed on Windows 10. Use 7-Zip to unpack the setup file into the .msi components, then unpack AppleApplicationSupport.msi and you will see the relevant library files, like this.

Apple have chosen to drop support for Windows XP and Vista, however Microsoft's latest operating system will still cater for most software that was originally designed to run on those platforms. iTunes has some legacy code built on the Visual C++ 2005 runtime libraries, that would appear to have been recompiled in 2011, presumably when certain security patches were incorporated.

Do you have later C++ libraries installed? Two of my Windows 10 systems (both with iTunes 12.2.2 installed and running without errors) only have the 2010 version of the Visual C++ redistributable; my third (by far the oldest of the three) has 2005, 2008 and 2010 versions - though I suspect that the existence of 2005 is left over from an old SQL Server installation and not related to iTunes.
