Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that the App Store is seemingly missing from your iPad after letting your son play with it. I know having a missing application which is used as often as the App Store can be concerning, but the good news is that the App Store cannot be deleted.
There could be two possibilities for the missing application. It sounds like you have done some extensive searching for it, but I would first suggest using the Spotlight search to verify that it has not been moved to a different page or folder. The attached article below explains using Spotlight search. When you open Spotlight, type in App Store. If the App Store application shows up on the search list, it is on your iPad and located in a folder or on a different page than you are use to seeing it on.

If the App Store does not show up when you perform a search for it, that means it has been restricted. Please use the information in the next attached article for help navigating restrictions on your iPad. If Installing Apps has been turned off in restrictions, the App Store will be removed from your home screen. Enable Installing Apps to get the application back on your home screen.
