missing disk utility
(using 10.5.8) disk utility is missing along with other functions. is there a way to format a new drive in single user?

Boot from the Leopard DVD and format the drive from there. Once you have done that you can reinstall Leopard.
Backup any data you want first because the reformat will destroy all data.
Just checking if this might be the problem...
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
I can't find my disk at the moment so I'm looking for other options rather than buying a new os.
Only other possibility is booting it int Firewire Target Disk Mode & using another Mac to Format it.
Well, I guess an external enclosure would work also.
How would you install an OS to it without an Install Disc?
The computer still works pretty much as it should, I only noticed this while trying to format an external hard drive.
