Updating Safari browser

Greetings:

I've been told I need to update my Safari browser (5.0.6) on my iMac OSX, 10.5.8. I tend to stick to the "tried & true" when it comes to electronics and that results

in outdated software, etc. I'm comfortable with it, outdated or not. I'm also afraid my old scanner and other programs won't work with a newer OS. However, is it possible to update Safari without updating the OS? And do you have a link where I can read about updating Safari (for Dummies)? Any help would be appreciated. Sharon

1. Not in that configuration.

2. If you aren't presented with any Safari or security updates in the Software Update pane of System Preferences or the Mac App Store's Updates tab(10.6.6 or newer only), you need to upgrade the OS.
