Need to find my iPhone without app

Are you trying to update your phone to iOS 8.4.1? If so do it with iTunes. See the second part of this guide.

I think their iPhone is lost and they need to update the iPad to use Find My iPhone. That's why I gave the alternative way to use Find My iPhone and the alternative way of updating iOS. -AJ

That is certainly the way I read it.

Yeah, you may be right. In any case updating his iOS through iTunes will be better.

Another thought... I don't know where you are at or why the over the air update is showing 35 hours but lately I have seen issues like that resolved by changing to the Open or Google's DNS, 8.8.8.8

Try this Settings > Wi-Fi > click on the little i inside the circle, somewhat like this ℹ then erase the DNS numbers and enter 8.8.8.8
