Macbook air shut down and restarted a lot of times

I was on skype last and then my laptop suddenly shut down and restarted by itself. It then did this multiple times. I tried to force shut down it a couple of times but that didnt help.
Now it wont start up. It only starts up when the lid is closed (i.e i can hear the start up chime and the logo turns bright. when i open the lid, it shuts down again) HELP PLEASE!

(P.S i dont know which version of Yosemite it is as i can't turn it on to check)

MacBook Air (13-inch Mid 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Does your fan really kick up or does it stay quiet. It really sounds like your Mac is reaching critical temps and shutting down. You say your on Skype at the time which may be a indicator. I would see what kind of CPU power your using through Activity Monitor. I don't use Skype but maybe someone could chime in on a bug causing problems with Skype?
