Q: When installing Quarkxpress 9 on Yosemite, the setup assistant keeps looping. Any ideas?

I've just got a new iMac with Yosemite. Transferring my copy of Quarkxpress 9 is proving impossible; the setup assistant keeps looping after I've entered all information. All codes are correct, it says 'setup successful' and the application must restart for new configuration to take effect. I click continue for this, but then the setup assistant appears again, in a loop. Please could someone help?

    Hi musicman72,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

I understand that you have moved a third party application, Quarkxpress 9, from your old Mac to your new one, but are unable to get through the set up process. In this situation, if in fact you copied and moved the application manually or migrated it, I would suggest deleting it from the new Mac and installing it as described in the attached article.

    Apps

Some applications need to install support files in special locations before they work. Instead of copying your apps from one computer to another, use these steps:

    • Check to make sure the app isn't already installed. Many Apple apps such as iPhoto, Pages and iTunes are already installed when you get your Mac.
    • Open the App Store from the Apple menu and log in using the same account you used on your old computer. You can re-download any apps you've purchased previously from the Purchases tab.
    • Use Software Update to check for any available free updates for apps you've purchased. Some apps may require updates to work their best on newer computers.
    • Re-download or reinstall any other applications you've purchased from third parties using the instructions provided by the developer of the software you're using.

    Best regards

you will need the original installers from Quark. In the past Quark could be registered and the applications folder could be dragged to a new system, but that method of distribution was taken away from newer versions and it requires a clean install and online-registration.

the last update to Quark 9.x is Quark 9.5.4.1 and it's two versions back from where Quark is now (Quark 2015)

    http://www.quark.com/en/Support/Downloads/Details.aspx?fid=277

Quark does not state 9.5.4.1 is compatible with any version of Yosemite. However while PlanetQuark states Quark 10.5 officially support Yosemite others have reported no problems with QXP 9.5.4.1 and OS 10.10.x

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.
