Photos export error

I recently upgraded to Yosemite Version 10.10.4 on my Macbook Pro (13-inch, Late 2011) with a 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 processor and a 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory. Now Photos doesn't work when I try to export to a folder. When I click on export photo, I get an error message that says "Export Complete with Errors." "0 (of 1) files have been exported to: blog. The export operation failed to create a file for the photo identified below." Then it says the file name and the error message "Could not load image (1,019)."

I don't know what the 1,019 refers to.

When I click on "Export Unmodified original" I get a similar error. It says

Export complete with Errors

0 (of 1) files have been exported to:

blog

The export operation failed to create a file for the photo identified below:

Then it has the filename and the following error message

The file "IMG_2578.JPG" couldn't be opened because there is no such file.

I don't get the above error message because there is clearly such a file.

Any help? Thanks!

I have essentially the same issue and error messages. I might add that drag and drop would also not work. To answer one of the questions above, I could not edit the pictures in "Photos". Also, the file names I wanted to export did not show up in a search on the file name, which is unusual.

There was a very vague clue regarding the two different photo libraries, which apparently is a result of moving to Yosemite, and the photo organizing application changing from the name "iPhoto" to only "Photos". In my Pictures folder I have two very large libraries, one with each of those names. The Photos Library has a more recent date, and is a larger footprint on the hard drive.

I looked into my original iPhoto library using Show Package Contents, and looked at the folder permissions for the library and the Masters folder. The user name was Read & Write, and the Staff was Read & Write. Then I went to the new Photos Library and looked at those (the file in the Pictures folder). The user name was Read & Write, but the Staff was Read Only. I changed the Staff to Read & Write, and then applied that change to all enclosed items (there is a selection in the Get Info panel for that easy change. That seems to have worked well, and at least in a couple initial tests, has solved my problem.

You need to be able to unlock the Get Info panel by clicking the little padlock in the bottom corner, so only an Admin can do this fix. Hopefully it works for others. PS: I recently set up this discussion profile for my wife, I am actually a lot more experienced then my 2 or 3 posts implies.

I had the same issue, for some reason at some point during upgrades about half of my photos couldn't be edited or exported. When I looked at the permissions on the Master folder, things looked fine, but on many of my photos in the subfolders another (Mac) user was the only one with permission. It happened to be a test account I had created along the way.

So I went back up to the Masters folder (did the unlock), added my user specifically, gave Read&Write AND then on the gear drop-down checked "Apply to enclosed items.." to ensure that the photos contained therein got the permissions. You need this to apply the permissions to all sub-folders and files. In hindsight, perhaps doing the same thing with "staff user" and applying to the enclosed items may have worked also.

Now I can edit and export. Hope this helps others.

This thread makes me hopeful. I'm trying to export 2,100 photos (from one album) to my external hard drive. I've done a few other albums (smaller, about 600 or fewer photos) successfully. But there are around 300 of these 2,100 that just won't export. I also tried simply copying them to the external HD with same result. They appear to be OK when viewed in Photos. Ultimately I want to delete these from Photos and keep them only on the external HD.
But I'm not sure I'm looking at your instructions correctly:

You said "I looked into my original iPhoto library using Show Package Contents, and looked at the folder permissions for the library and the Masters folder."

The only way I can see either the iPhoto or Photos libraries is using Finder. Is that correct? If so, I can't find an option in Finder for Show Package Contents. I also can't see a Masters folder; not sure what I'm looking for there.

I did use Get Info (in Finder) for both the iPhoto and Photos libraries and found some permissions listed at the bottom of that window. For myself it was set for Read & Write. For Staff it was Read Only. I changed Staff to Read & Write permissions. The lock icon was open, but I've now changed it to the locked position.

Next, you said "....and then applied that change to all enclosed items (there is a selection in the Get Info panel for that easy change." I don't see an option in that panel to change all enclosed options. What am I missing?

I just upgraded yesterday from Mountain Lion (10.8.5) to Yosemite (10.10.5), and as a result changed from iPhoto to Photos 1.0.1. Please, oh please, don't tell me I have to update to El Capitan just yet; it took me several months to screw up the courage to upgrade to Yosemite. And now I've developed a facial tic....

Here is what I did - and WORK!!

Sorry - I was helping my daughter to fix the same issue and I am not a proficient MAC user so the flow may not be 100% right. But you guys should get this. She encountered the same issue when transfer her old photos from an old MAC to the new Mac. Somehow, I think, the process messed up the permission....Anyway..

Go to Finder

  1. Go to Your Home (users)
  2. Go to Picture Folder
  3. Within Picture - find the iPhoto or Photo Library
  4. Right Click, and Click on Show Package Content
  5. You can see Masters in list of folders
  6. Select Masters, Right click Get Info (Make sure you are Admin)
  7. Unlock
  8. On the Shared: Click on the Admin or whoever you want - make sure the permission is READ and WRITE
  9. Click on the Gear ICON
  10. Click "Apply Enclosed Items"
  11. You will see a message to say that this cannot undone - Ignore
  12. Once MAC finish applying the permission, you should be able to export the photos

Wha la - now Export works!!

The process outlined by Wilzto essentially worked for me but I ended up resorting to a Terminal to re-assign permissions...

In Photos, select Photos / Preferences to identify your photo library location. After the dialog pops up, there is a button "Show in Finder" - press this to get to your photos directory.

This opens it in the Finder, then right click and Show Package Content. Next right-click on the "Masters" folder and press "Option" to reveal the "Copy Masters as Pathname" menu item. Select this and then from a terminal window:

$ cd '(Photos Masters Directory)'; chown -R `whoami` *

Your full path should be on the clipboard so just Command+V to paste that in for (Photos Master Directory). You may need to restart Photos but after this I was then able to export once again.
