First thing I would do before a major upgrade, is to make a perfect clone of the current situation. That way you can always go back.

Now, most probably nothing has gone. Try to locate, in <yourusername (your Home)>/Pictures a file called iPhoto Library. If you find that, half the work is done.

What I would also look out for, in the Applications folder, whether you have the programs iPhoto (as in the past), and Photos (as of the new upgrade). Check the version, especially that of iPhoto. Should be 9.6.1. If an older copy, there will be a prohibitory sign over its icon. There are other topics here dealing with how to get iPhoto up and running again.

Now, you should make up your mind. Are you going to give the new Photos program a try? In that case, either launch Photos with the Option (Alt) key depressed, and go looking for that iPhoto Library (as I told you: in your Pictures folder). It will be converted for Photos, and depending on its size, this can take some time. But no panic. You should still be able to access the old iPhoto Library (hence, after conversion) with iPhoto, provided you've got the most current version.

Good luck, and please post back if something is not clear, or if you have additional questions about the migration.

Hi there and thank you for the speedy reply!

I have a clone on an external hard drive.

When I plugged it in and tried to open it...Photos took over and started to convert them all with no option to stop or cancel so I had no option.

I tried to open iPhoto but it has a kind of "no entry" sign now and when clicked this message comes up

The version of iPhoto installed on this Mac is not compatible with OS X Yosemite. Download the latest version for free from the Mac App Store.

I clicked Search App Store and the App Store says "Item no longer available"

So now I can't check to see what's mossing 😟

Photos should normally not convert automatically without you giving permission somehow.

That said, you will have to get hold of iPhoto 9.6.1. I ran into the same trap of upgrading without prior update of iPhoto, as there was no mention of that in the App Store. Read this: Is Iphoto gone ? i want it back!

In brief: the old iPhoto should be in the Trash. Go to the App store, but use the Purchased tab. iPhoto should be in the list.

Hello - I have also lost all my photos. I recently clicked on the iphotos logo to be informed that the photo's have been migrated over to an icon called photos. When I clicked on that it just says that the library is closing. I have looked in the trash folder and received the same message. It is worrying for me because I have lots of photos on the hard drive somewhere but the computer won't let me open them. Please can you assist. I am not compute savvy so have great difficulty looking how to access them.

Thanx Pauli
