Q: kernel panic! advice?

Hello...

My MacBook has had to shut down unexpectedly a few times over the last month or so and I'm now nervous about what the issue might be. It has just happened again and I'm wondering if anyone can make sense of the details that the computer supplies as I can't see anything that points to a specific bit of software or hardware error.. but I have no idea what I'm looking for so could be missing it...

If I posted the details on here, would someone be able to tell what caused the error this time?

My MacBook is having a kernel panic and so am I!

Thanks in advance!

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

Use these instructions to log and post the kernel panic:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201753

    Ciao.

These are software candidates that may be causing your problems.

    Screen Shot 2015-08-24 at 3.45.23 PM.png

Definitely delete AVAST.  You do not need it and I suspect it is the reason for the poor performance.  Un-installation instructions can be found here:

    https://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB67

If the kernel panics do not stop, delete the rest of the items.

    Ciao.

    Thanks!

Avast is the only one that I know... and I thought it was helping!

I think I'll get rid of the others too. Any tips on how to make sure they are gone?

Do your self a big favor, do NOT install any AV software.  Avast has one of the worst reputations.

    Ciao.

You must have a degree of faith in the developers un-install software.  As I see it, you have two options to check if Avast is gone.  Download EasyFind and make a search.  Or you can erase the HDD and reinstall everything but Avast ( I do not recommend doing this unless all else fails).

I thought I'd got rid of Avast and yet I've just had another panic....

Any ideas what else might be the problem?

    Things have improved!

Now instead of a kernel panic (which takes out the whole machine) you have one task crashing. Unfortunately launchd is the one task that launches everything else, so it is still pretty serious. This is most likely to be caused by something you have added.

You need to get a list of all the extensions and launch items that have been added.

One way of doing this is by downloading and running etrecheck. Etrecheck  looks at a lot of different things, and may raise some alarms for things that end up not being alarming, but it is a stable, quick and easy "packaged" way to get a lot of information without much fuss.

Is the RAM original with the MBP or a third party addition?

That is a treasure trove of information about your Mac. if you can cut-and-paste the text of that output, Readers will be happy to look through it for problems. Do not be concerned that it is lengthy. It is still way smaller than all the bits required for a Photograph.
