Hi Terri,
From what you are telling me, the only sounds you are not hearing from your iPhone are alert tones, is that correct? Is it possible that you Do Not Disturb enabled? Do Not Disturb will silence your calls, alerts, and notifications.
Use Do Not Disturb on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204321
With Do Not Disturb, you can silence calls, alerts, and notifications that you get while your device is locked.
When Do Not Disturb is on, a crescent moon , or half-moon, icon will appear in the status bar. There are two ways to turn Do Not Disturb on or off:
- Tap Settings > Do Not Disturb. Choose Manual to turn on Do Not Disturb now or set a schedule.
- Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open Control Center. Tap the crescent moon.
Terri, if you are still not able to hear alert tones after following the troubleshooting steps and confirming Do Not Disturb is turned off, you may need to contact one of our technical support advisors for further troubleshooting.
If you can't hear sound from the speaker,
contact Apple Support.
Take care,
