Q: my computer crashed how to get my data from icloud

My iMac has been acting up, if I change my hard drive will I be able to transfer my data from iCloud.com? I also have it backed up on an external drive.

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

Unless something has changed very recently, it is not possible to back up your Mac using iCloud.

If you elect to have the hard drive replaced on the iMac, the shop will also install new operating system software on the drive......so in effect, you will have a "new" Mac.

When you first start up the "new" Mac, Setup Assistant will appear and ask you if you want to restore your backup of the previous Mac. When you do this, the "new" Mac will then look just like your "old" Mac.

Unless you have already done something like this before, things will likely be easier and simpler if you take the external hard drive in with the iMac and ask the shop to transfer the data from the backup over to the "new" iMac.

    Thanks Bob!

I also have the time machine backing up daily on my my external hard drive, It backs up everything on my computer right? including my 85,000 pictures and tons of iTunes lol.

I have a macbook pro as well, would you recommend a separate external drive for that one separately?

I use iCloud.com and iCloud drive as well, are they the same or different? As when I use pages in my iCloud, I do see it still shows beta, but I also do see the icon for the iCloud drive as well so I just want to make sure I am updated.

    Thanks in advance

Yes, Time Machine does back up everything on your Mac......unless you have told it to exclude certain items from backups.

Best to ask those questions on an iCloud support forum. Apple's link is here........
