I just purchased a Dell UltraSharp U2415 monitor and a Mac Mini (late 2014 model) and am looking for assistance on how to connect them to take full advantage of the 16:10 ratio. As I understand it, if I go hdmi to hdmi I will only get 16:9 - 1080p.
I opted for the 16:10 model so I could get a little more vertical screen space. Thank you for any assistance you can pass along.

The monitor comes with a mini displayport > displayport cable, is there a difference if I use the included cable, or should I go and buy a mini display port > mini display port cable?
You can use the singe the monitor has a displayport input. A displayport is electrically the same as a mini displayport, only the physical size is different
You can use the included Mini Displayport to Displayport cable it will work fine. For what its worth HDMI does support 16:10 as well as 16:9, the maximum resolution for HDMI 1.4 which is what that monitor and the Mac mini use is 1920x1200 which is a 16:10 resolution.
