Downgrading MacOS 10.10.x to 10.8.5?

I have a business need to downgrade a new iMac running 10.10.x to 10.8.5 for several applications not yet compatible with Yosemite. First of all, is this possible? Secondly, what are the recommended steps to do so? I have a purchased copy of 10.8.5.

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

1. If the iMac originally shipped with Mavericks or Yosemite, no. Otherwise, yes.

2. Install the older OS or restore a backup of it onto a blank partition or drive.

The iMac did ship with Yosemite. Is it still possible to do option 2?
