iTunes is completely counter-intuitive. After downloading the latest version of iTunes, 12.2.2.25, I want make a new backup of my ipad from the ipad to my Mac. I can't see how to do that. If I choose file>devices> I only get to transfer purchases. I've got a bunch of stuff transferred via GoodReader.
This should not be so obscure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm on OSX 10.9.5

No. That is not possible.
What am I missing here? What happens when you connect your iPad to your Mac and open iTunes? Then what happens when you select the iPad icon at the top? Don't you get a Summary window with Update on the right / bottom ????

ooops. Back up is noyt in the window as previously. I'ts in a menu.
