Q: Mid-2012 MacBook Pro - Random restarts

I have a mid-2012 13" MacBook Pro. The machine randomly restarts several times a day by freezing the screen and cursor, then restarting on its own. There's never consistency as to when/why it occurs; sometimes I'm browsing a webpage, sometimes I'm changing a track in Apple Music, sometimes I'm writing code in one of my text editors, editing a photo in Photoshop, etc.

I thought a bad hard drive was the problem, so I replaced the factory HDD with an SSD and moved the HDD to the SuperDrive location. While the machine is much more faster thanks to the SSD, the restarts continue to occur. I'm running on a fresh copy of 10.10.5. What's bizarre is that I can go 1-2 days without an issue, and then be hit by it like a ton of bricks. I wrote down how many times it occured over the course of a business day, and the highest is 37 restarts. I also thought the problem was heat related, but it has restarted when just powering on, so I've ruled that out.

Does anyone have some ideas as to what is causing this? It's far out of warranty and I'm not thrilled at replacing this machine so soon. My most recent log is attached:

Take out the third party RAM and install the original RAM.  Do the kernel panics stop?

These are software candidates that MAY be causing problems.  If the RAM swap does not solve the kernel panics, delete these items and see if there is an improvement:

    Ciao.

Thanks for the RAM suggestion. I do not think that is the culprit as I never used the stock RAM; when I purchased the machine, I also purchased new memory and installed - I never turned on this machine with the stock RAM. The restarting problem began well over a year after that.

It's going to be difficult to uninstall Virtualbox as I rely on it for work (I'm a developer), but I suppose I can try it out. Since I can't exactly duplicate the problem, I'll have to wait and see if it helps. It's worth mentioning that Virtualbox and Soundflower have been installed since I bought the computer and have not given me any other issues, and the restarting occurred well after those were installed.

In addition to the items that I have pointed out, you might also check out the Samsung SSD.  These forums have had a number of posts with misbehaving Samsung EVO 850 SSDs (there have been success stories as well).  Samsung Technical support has not received high marks and the Samsung website makes no mention of Mac compatibility the last time I looked.

Those are the potential problem areas that the report indicates.  You might pursue some additional troubleshooting via this Apple support article:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT200553

An appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a FREE evaluation is always a good option.  Bring the kernel panic report with you.

    Ciao.

I appreciate this thought. But as I said in my original post, the problem occurred well before the SSD was installed, as my previous research into this issue pointed to HDD issues.

I fully understand that.  All I can do is to report to you what I see in the kernel panic report without the benefit of any experience with your MBP.  There may be another problem(s) that the report does not disclose that is at the root.  The only other step you might consider is running an Apple Hardware Test which may offer a clue:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201257

Note that an error free AHT is not definitive.

    Ciao.
