Why group/ungroup is greyed out?

On one sheet I have:

On another sheet I have:

Where cells F,G,H2 are grouped.

I think this is what is causing the "No SCHC" to get chopped off.

When I try to ungroup those cells & regroup them the Arrange-Group/Ungroup are greyed out.

Matter of fact they seem to always be greyed out.

So What would cause the text to Not flow over the next cell(s) since they are empty?

How do I group cells - what might be causing that item to be greyed out?

btw - I'm still on Numbers 2.3 in case that matters.

(ps Yes I know one sheet says the 9th day of school and the other the 1st.

I need to fix a cell formula and will do that next.)

HI Bob,

Group and Ungroup apply to objects, not to cells.

Shapes, for example, are groupable objects. If you have two or more of these objects selected, Group will be active (black). If you have at least one grouped object selected, Ungroup will be active.

Cells may be merged or split using the buttons in the Merge and Split section of the Table Inspector.User uploaded file

Text will flow into empty cells, but not into merged cells, even if those are empty.

If the cells are then unmerged, text will again flow into the empty cells.

"If I keep going with split eventually the words show up.

Looks like I have a lot of work to do splitting cells and deleting columns."

When I was checking out the response above, I selected all three cells in the group, then clicked merge. When unmerging them later, I selected the merged cell and clicked the same button (on the left), which now showed solid vertical and horizontal lines between images of four 'cells', and presented the message below when I hovered the mouse over the button.

Try that instead of the Split button. It may save some steps.

So the merge might also be an 'unmerge'. Interesting.

I had gone back to ground zero and used the correct sheet as a template and started over.

I thought building a new sheet from the old might be less confusing, and who knows maybe even quicker, than trying to undo a bunch of things I didn't know the beginnings of.

But I tried your idea on a copy of the original and it did indeed work.

Thanks
