My Mac has OS 10.6.8 and every time I visit gmail or some other websites, I get messages that this version of Safari is no longer supported - update to a newer version. However, when I check my computer for software updates- I have none. I also can't seem to download a newer Safari version from apple.com. What am I missing?

Safari is an integral part of Mac OS X so you must update the operating system from 10.6.8 to something higher to get a later Safari version.
What year MacBook Pro do you have, and have you considered updating Mac OS X?

You can also use a browser like Google's Chrome or FireFox since those are fully updated for Snow Leopard
Alternatively, ignore the messages and press on. Safari 5.1.10 (6534.59.10) is the latest for Snow Leopard.

Some sites just will not work with the older versions of Safari because of security problems.
I've not run across any of those.
