Q: rsync3 devours HDD after installing 10.10.5.

Hello :

 

Has anybody experienced, after updating to 10.10.5, rsync3 writing huge amounts of data till the point of strangling the system to virtually no space on the HDD?

 

It happened on my MBP8,1 after installing 10.10.5. All of a sudden the system went sluggish, with barely 1% of space on the HDD. I freed space by moving out videos; but rsync3 wrote again up to 147.57 GB as root. I stopped the process via Activity Monitor.

 

I bet now I´ll have to learn the man pages to figure out where was all that undesired date written at, recover the disk space and prevent rsync3 to even launch.

Hi Linc :

 

Great hint, it helped me to solve the issue. Thank you!

 

It was running under Get Backup 2, the App being used to backup the main HDD by synchronisation on a periodical basis

For some reason GB2 created a hidden folder (directory) where it was cloning the main HDD when the backup HDD was´t plugged in.


How I proceeded :

  1. On Activity Monitor / Disk arrange all processes by clicking View > All Processes, Hierarchical;
  2. Searched for rsyn3 and identified the parent process, which is outdented;
  3. On Get Backup 2 it was rather easy to find and follow the path under which the hidden folder was placed at. I could just click on it at the Destination box and Finder opened the location, at the Library directory;
  4. Once there, just deleted it; emptying the Trash cleared about .5TB which let the system smoothly operating;
  5. On GB2 the Synchronise project was deleted and a new Clone project created, with manual start.

 

So far the issue has been solved; call that Artificial Intelligence correction by Human Hand.
