Q: Help / No USB when installing BootCamp on MBP Late 2013

I have been trying now for about a week to get Boot Camp installed on my MBP.  I am getting many difficulties along the way which have meant I haven't been able to complete it.  These are the steps and problems I am getting:-

OS - OSX Yosemite 10.10.5

1. Run Boot Camp Assistant

2. Click all 3 options, insert my USB 2.0 16GB pen drive and point to my Windows 7 Pro ISO

3. Go through all the options and allow Windows installation to start

Part way through it crashes out due to AppleSSD.sys not being available or missing.  I googled this problem and some said to download BootCamp 5.1.5621 to my MAC and replace the $WINPE$ and BootCamp folders on the USB drive with the ones in the 5.1.5621 folder.  I did this and started the process again and the installation pass this point.

However when windows I am missing many drivers, i.e. Network Drivers, USB drivers etc..  I can't connect to my Wireless network to download and install the,  Neither will the Windows installation see the USB pen drive that has the boot camp file on to install the drivers manually.

Basically I can't get the drivers inside of the Windows install via the Internet or USB... Help!!

This seems like a major flaw in the setup of BC for me and not sure how to address this??

Any ideas?  Has anyone come across this?  If so what did you do to solve it?

Thanks

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

If you insert your USB, can you see setup.exe in Bootcamp folder on the USB? If yes, please see Boot Camp: Solve Windows support software installation problems .

5.1..5621 should be used for specific Macs, not all Macs based on System requirements to install Windows 7 and earlier on your Mac using Boot Camp - Apple Support .

I can't see the USB drive when in Windows or any other USB drive I plug in - the USB drivers are not installing.

I can see setup.exe under OS X when the USB is plugged in but that is worthless...

5.1.5621 was only used to get me around the Applessd.sys error/issue.

Could the deleting of $winpe$ and bootcamp folders from the USB & replacing them with the 5.1.5621 be the cause of the issue in that I am  wiping away drivers from the main folder which means no drivers are available to install at time of setup?

If so, how do I fix the applessd.sys issues to prevent it from happening?

I have also completely wiped my entire MAC and reinstalled form scratch to see if it was something bad in the OS X install - still doesn't work?! :-(

Surely I can't be the only person experiencing this?

This is not related to OS X at all. BC Assistant is downloading BC6 drivers (you can check product version in Bootcamp.xml which is likely 6.0.6133). By integrating 5.1.5621, the boot environment is not changed, only AppleSSD.sys is removed from this Preboot environment - $WinPEDriver$ are drivers that are loaded prior to Windows setup.

Download Paragon NTFS Trial for Mac, which will allow OS X to read-write access to Windows partition, copy the USB contents to a folder of your choice on the Windows partition. Boot into Windows and run setup.exe from the Bootcamp folder which is inside the folder you just copied the USB contents to.

Ok but really I need a 3rd party product to get this working?

This seems overkill for something that apple support..

Ok but if I am replacing the $winpedriver$ and Bootcamp folders with version 5 and we are on version 6 then surely this could be part of the issue?

Would I be better to leave those folders untouched and just swap out the AppleSSD.sys driver with the version 5 one?

    Using the following structure...

    Bootcamp-v6-v5-combined.png

I have installed W7 on a 2012 13-in MBP a couple of days ago. If you do not want to use Paragon, wipe your current Windows installation using BCA (only) and make your USB look like this one and re-try the installation.

Ok, the main difference I see there is that you have move the AppleSSD folder from $WinPEDriver$ folder to the BootCamp\Apple Folder.

and then you have put a copy of the v5 boot camp files in the root of the USB....

I've wiped the partition and will re-start (just with 3rd box ticked) after changing my USB....

    Thanks..  I;ll feedback..

Ok so install went through to completion and I am presented with a Windows desktop.  But once again no USB when drive plugged in, no network cards, no way to install missing drivers... See screen show:-

Any suggestions or am I left with the only option being Paragon NTFS trial?  If so then which of the drivers off the boot camp CD do I need to choose from to solve?

I think you are missing my point... That article says boot into Windows and put the USB drive in and run Install or Repair...

How can I do this when Windows doesn't pickup the USB drive as being connected to the computer?

If I could get to the drivers then I would happily run Install or Repair but I just can't get to them!

    Any other ideas?

I think I will have to do it via the 3rd party addon method and use Paragon to copy the file manually to the Windows partition so I can simply run the Install.  Seems apple are missing a key issue here.

The BC6 drivers are not valid for Windows 7 hence they fail installation, which happens as part of the Windows installation silently for W8 and W10. W7 support has been deprecated in the new BC6 drivers. Since you are installing a deprecated version of Windows, this is your work around.

Ah ok, that makes some sense then.

Is it possible to create a USB drive with the correct bootcamp files on for Windows 7?  If so how?

I guess it can't simply be a matter of downloading 5.1.xxxx and copying those files on as I have done that before and it still didn't work.

So my only other option after that one is to install Windows 8 or 10?

Yes, if you use System requirements to install Windows 7 and earlier on your Mac using Boot Camp - Apple Support and download the specific package for your Mac year/model to a USB2 flash drive.

Once they are on USB, since your USB drivers on W7 are not installed yet, you can either use Repair and install these drivers from the uSB, or, use Paragon and copy them into a folder on the Windows side (from OSX) and then switch to Windows and run BC Drivers Repair.

So my only other option after that one is to install Windows 8 or 10?

W8 will have the same issue. W10 will work. But if you need/want W7, at this point, Paragon seems to be the most logical solution. Once they are working, you can uninstall Paragon. Try it via Paragon. I can help, if you run into any issues using Paragon.

    Update...

So I have downloaded and installed the Paragon NTFS trial and copied the following folders from my USB drive to the NTFS Boot Camp partition.  I created a folder in what would be C:\boot camp and put the following folders in there:

    $WinPEDriver$

    BootCamp

    BootCamp5.1.5621

However now on rebooting to Windows I get to the login screen but the keyboard and trackpad mouse down work at all so now I can't login to install the drivers that I copied to the C: drive ....

    ufffff.

    Stuck again.. sorry.

Can you boot in Windows Safe Mode? It should let you see the drivers. If you had a working keyboard/mouse, crying these files should not impact your existing drivers. Was anything else changed? You also posted a screen shot, so this behavior is puzzling at best.
