I see from your post that whenever you delete an email it is then deleted from your husband's iPhone. This indicates you are using the same email account on your iPhones that uses IMAP rather than POP in which it is expected behavior. To avoid this, you can look into seeing if your email provider has the option to use a POP account, in which you can then follow the steps in the link below to use on multiple devices.
