Aug 25, 2015 7:40 AM in response to freddiemerionby Niel,If you previously bought iPhoto from or associated it with the Mac App Store, click here and follow the instructions.
If not, no, unless Apple says otherwise.

Aug 25, 2015 7:47 AM in response to freddiemerionby Csound1,Your copy of iPhoto is ut of date (you should have kept it updated and then you would have the correct version) but you can still obtain it.
1. Place your existing copy of iPhoto in the trash (don't empty the trash)
2. Go to the Mac App Store and select the Purchases page, iPhoto should be there
3. Download and install iPhoto, you'll have version 9.6.1 which will run on Yosemite.
4 Keep it up to date to avoid things like this in future.
5. (Optional) empty the trash.

Aug 25, 2015 8:34 AM in response to Csound1by freddiemerion,I went to the App Store, clicked on Photography apps, clicked on "I" to narrow down my search, but there doesn't seem to be iPhoto listed.

Aug 25, 2015 8:40 AM in response to freddiemerionby Niel,You won’t find it by looking there. You need to check your previous purchases, including hidden ones, and need to have previously gotten iPhoto from or associated it with the Mac App Store.
Csound1: Some people have gotten iPhoto from an iLife DVD or a computer which shipped with 10.6.8 or earlier. They won’t see iPhoto in the Mac App Store’s Purchases tab(unless they associated it with the Mac App Store while running Mavericks), and can’t get iPhoto 9.6.1.

Why did you do that? Try following the instructions
1. Place your existing copy of iPhoto in the trash (don't empty the trash)
2. Go to the Mac App Store and select the Purchases page, iPhoto should be there
3. Download and install iPhoto, you'll have version 9.6.1 which will run on Yosemite.

Why did you not follow the instructions I posted, you'll never get it right if you keep on ignoring instructions.

Yes, I am aware of that possibility but prefer to deal with it when needed rather than complicate simple instructions that will in most cases be correct.

Aug 25, 2015 9:45 AM in response to Csound1by freddiemerion,I thought I did. I first dragged my old iPhoto to Trash, then went to the App Store. There isn’t any “Purchases” box to click on. So I went to the app list under Photography, and there’s no iPhoto listed.

Aug 27, 2015 8:32 AM in response to freddiemerionby brucebantam,I have tried to download the version of iPhoto which works with Yosemite, iPhoto 9.6.1 following the instructions here, but it only ever downloads version 9.5.1.
It occurred to me this might be because I am in Mavericks? Could this be the case? I don't want to install Yosemite and find there is no way back to using iPhoto as I don't have the correct version for Yosemite. So I am trying to get hold of a copy of iPhoto 9.6.1 first.
One other small point, when I've dragged iPhoto to the Trash, restarted, and then opened the App Store app, gone to Purchased, iPhoto now gives the option "INSTALL" not update. When I click the INSTALL button it only downloads the 9.5.1 version.
Would I be safe to install Yosemite, and then Purchased would show iPhoto with UPDATE?
What worries me is freddiemerrion in his original posting says:
The App Store says it doesn't have the necessary version of iPhoto for use with Yosemite.
If that's the case, where can I get iPhoto 9.6.1?
Can someone clear this up for me, please?
Thanks!

If you are still running Mavericks, there should be no problem. At that time, there was no Photos (you need Yosemite 10.10.3 for the first version of Photos) nor any iPhoto version becoming incompatible. What's the problem?

Aug 27, 2015 9:04 AM in response to lescornwellby brucebantam,Hi Les
I don't think you have understood my posting.
The problem is I want to upgrade to Yosemite but don't want to make the switch until I have a copy of iPhoto 9.6.1 first. I have followed the instructions given here but I keep getting 9.5.1 instead.
I wondered if this was because I am still in Mavericks, and perhaps you only get to download 9.6.1 if you are already in Yosemite.
Am I correct?
