I set up my iphone 6 security with my thumb print and now phone is asking for a passcode after 48 hours...what is this and why? I don't remember setting up a passcode, is it possible I did not?

No, it is not possible that you did not. The first step in enabling Touch ID is to create a passcode. You will need the passcode after rebooting the phone, or to add fingerprints.

Thank you for your response. Is the passcode 4 letters/numbers? For the life of me, I cannot remember it. I read I must go to iCloud to erase everything on my phone to recover or change the passcode...sound right to you?
It's 4 digits by default. You can change it to a complex password if you want to, but most people don't bother, as you only get 10 guesses.
