Computer crashed and then only showed the grey start up screen and the apple logo.
Started in safe mode and now it will not accept my password on the Log on screen with the red safe mode described in the top right corner.
Can anyone advise how I get my computer working again?

Yes, this has also happened to me. Just did the latest Yosemite update after putting it off for a week or two. Now I get nothing but a black screen and a cursor. Have reinstalled OSX in Recovery mode, reset password just in case but Safe mode will still not get past the password screen.
I have a 27" iMac from late 2011. I'm really at a loss for what to do now. May have to extract all data to an external drive.
