I have cleared the cache reset passwords updated to latest version of iTunes, but still no joy. I have BT net protest plus for firewall (McAfee)

It sounds like there's an issue that's preventing images from loading in the iTunes Store and the issue is also preventing you from downloading anything from the iTunes Store. Take a look at the article linked below and use the instructions that it provides to identify and remove any conflicting Layered Service Provider software.
