why does my old iphone 4 need to connect to itunes?

I am trying to use my old phone which i no longer have a contract for. I have charged the phone and when i turn it on, it says to connect to itunes. If i try to connect it to my laptop, nothing works. it switches off again. Any ideas?

Hi carlykidman,

I understand you are trying to use your old iPhone as an iPod. However, iTunes is not recognizing the device and will not launch. Is iTunes working correctly with your current iPhone? The steps in the article below may be helpful in this situation.
